Custom Casted Axe

Personal fine art piece displaying fabrication skills with custom silicone molds and advanced multi-layer epoxy casting and encapsulating techniques.
Going into this project I was playing around with the idea of humans roll in the destruction of nature and then I wanted to contradict that with the act of preservation. One of the first “modern” tools to ever be found was a 40,000-year-old sharpened rock attached to a stick (axe) discovered in Australia. Not only was this tool used for harvesting the earth’s resources, but also became a crucial weapon used in war. The axe became an icon of destruction, greed, and violence. Today, more than ever, preserving our environment is of the upmost importance to me. This piece visually signifies the delicate balance of a tool used to destroy, while simultaneously acting as a vessel to preserve nature’s beauty. The resin elegantly encases the wildlife for eternity and forces the viewer to slow down and appreciate its pristine beauty, yet it is juxtaposed within the very tool that began its destruction 40,000 years ago. A stark reminder to not be fooled by life’s simple pleasures and to step back to view the bigger picture.
